WINNERS OF THE PHOTO CONTEST – THE JURY'S CHOICE
It was not easy to choose a winner for the "Jury's Choice" award from among all the incredible northern lights photos that were submitted to the competition in March. But right from the start, the competition jury—consisting of Calle Rosenqvist and Kamado —found one photo that stood out a little more than the others because of its atmosphere, composition, and content.
– When I turn out of an intersection and look in the rearview mirrors, I see that it's the northern lights, so I stop and take a few photos, which turned out to be a great success, explains winner Helen Westberg from Stensele, who photographed the incredible image with her phone.

Helen – what a fantastic picture! Congratulations from us on the jury, we really loved the picture! How did you take it?
– The picture was taken just before Bullerforsen, outside Vilhelmina Västerbotten. I had been on a winter road across a marsh in Svannäs and loaded birch wood to be taken to the terminal in Storuman. When I turned out of an intersection and looked in the rearview mirrors, I saw the northern lights, so I stopped and took a few photos, which turned out to be a great success!
That's exactly right! What were your thoughts when you decided to get out of the truck and photograph the northern lights?
The picture was taken purely by chance, as I said. If I hadn't looked more closely in the rearview mirrors, I probably wouldn't have stopped right there and then. I captured this with my phone, an iPhone 14. I wanted to include the northern lights and the lights on the truck, and a few weeks earlier I had taken a picture of the northern lights from behind the truck – so this time it was from the front! I also think it created a nice effect with the truck's white, orange, and red lights against the colors of the northern lights. Colorful!
And the northern lights, is that something you usually photograph when you're out on the road?
I grew up outside Dikanäs, Vilhelminafjällen, so the northern lights have always been around. It's far from the nearest big city, 20–35 miles, so it feels like it's darker and easier to spot with less light to interfere and cause you to miss it. It feels like pretty good conditions. However, it's only in recent years that I've become interested in photography in general, mostly wild animals and dogs. I started photographing the northern lights this winter by pure chance. I saw one and simply took the time to stop and take a picture. Which I really don't regret!
We understand that. And how did you decide to enter the photo in the contest?
Because I got such an ENORMOUS response in the "Norrsken" group when I first posted the photo! Over 12,000 likes! So then I saw the competition and thought it was worth a try.
Can you reveal your best tips on how to find the northern lights and capture them beautifully on camera?
– Seize the moment if you see one! It doesn't take long to go outside, stop the vehicle, get up from the couch, and take out your camera. I think there are some great tips in the group when there's a chance of seeing the northern lights. Be outside when it's clear and dark. But you can do what I do, drive a truck at night...
Do you have any other favorite subjects when you're not photographing the northern lights?
Beavers!
We congratulate Helen Westberg, winner of the "Jury's Choice" award and a Kamado Mini worth SEK 3,500.

NORRSKENSGRUPPENS VAL DECIDED – HERE IS THE WINNER!
Of the 40 finalists, it was Andrés Larrota who won the hearts of voters with his photo of a beautiful northern lights display photographed in Jukkasjärvi.
– I was out trying to photograph the BROR rocket, but managed to capture this northern lights display instead! I was lucky to be in the right place when this huge northern lights display suddenly appeared, he says.
Between April 5 and 23, over 1,600 people voted for Andrés Larrota's winning photo from among the 40 finalists selected by Calle Rosenqvist and Kamado , in fierce competition with all the fantastic photos tagged for the contest in the Norrsken group on Facebook. Following his win, we contacted Andrés to hear a little more about both the photo and him.
Congratulations on your win, Andrés! Can you tell us a little more about when you took the photo?
– The photo was taken in Jukkasjärvi on March 23 this year, on the launch day of Esrange's BROR rocket. I was out trying to photograph the rocket, but managed to capture this northern lights display instead! I was lucky to be in the right place when this huge northern lights display suddenly appeared.
It turned out to be a successful result with a powerful northern lights display—did you have a strategy for how to get a good picture once you were there to take photos?
— By not only photographing the northern lights, but also a person looking at them, I think the feeling is enhanced. It becomes clearer how powerful the northern lights are and how fantastic it is to witness them – sometimes it's so impressive that you're completely speechless. I liked the picture because of the tones I managed to capture; it's not often you can photograph the pink, purple, and red tones.
You say you were lucky to be in the right place—do you have any tips to share with those hunting for the Northern Lights?
— The Northern Lights can be unpredictable, so keep an eye on weather forecasts and solar activity to increase your chances of catching them. I usually use an app to know which evenings to go out. Choose a night with minimal clouds and high solar activity to increase your chances of seeing the Northern Lights.
: My best tip is to be patient. The northern lights can be fleeting and come and go quickly, so be patient and be ready to take the picture when they appear. Also, use manual focus because the northern lights are often faint, and the camera may have difficulty focusing. It's best to use manual focus to get a sharp image.
Is it just the northern lights that interest you, or do you photograph other things as well?
– I like to photograph nature and the changing seasons in northern Sweden, as well as the city where I live, Kiruna, and its surroundings. I moved to Kiruna from Colombia six years ago, and when I experienced the beautiful nature and seasons here, I bought a camera and started taking pictures. In Colombia, winter and especially the northern lights are something very exotic, and I wanted to show my family and friends who stayed behind how fantastic northern Sweden is. After starting to publish my photos on Instagram, I now have many Colombian followers and have also started a small photography company called Nordlig Photo.
