FAQ

- Can I use charcoal briquettes or lighter fluid in my kamado grill?

Avoid this! Briquettes contain various materials like nitrates, chemicals, anthracite coal, limestone, treated wood, starch, sawdust, and petroleum by-products.

- What kind of charcoal should I use to avoid these additives?

We recommend using only 100% natural charcoal for a clean and controllable heat source. Natural charcoal burns efficiently and produces very little ash, making cleanup easy. NEVER USE lighter fluid or charcoal products that contain lighter fluid, as it's not needed and can give your food a chemical taste.

- I see small cracks in the ceramic glaze, is this normal?

Crazing occurs when ceramics are painted and the ceramics and glazes solidify at different temperatures. A spiderweb-like pattern then appears, which can be found on all painted ceramic products and kamado grills. This does not affect the lifespan of the ceramic or the surface in general, and the function of your Sumo is also not affected by it. It is more or less prominent under different lighting conditions and sometimes you can even reduce its visibility by cleaning the surface with a damp cloth.

- I have used lighter fluid in my Kamado Sumo, and now it smells bad. What can I do?

If you have used lighter fluid in your kamado, you will need to light your kamado to 250° C and perform several burn-offs without food for about an hour each to burn off the lighter fluid and its smell.

- What is a Heat Deflector and why should I use one?

A heat deflector is used for indirect cooking in your Kamado SUMO, creating a barrier between the food and the fire, effectively turning your kamado into an outdoor convection oven. The design of the heat deflector allows heat to radiate inside the kamado and prevents direct heat from the fire from reaching the food. A heat deflector will definitely add versatility to your outdoor cooking.

- Can I place the barbecue directly on a wooden surface or a table?

Do not place the kamado directly on a wooden surface or near a combustible surface. The bottom of the kamado generates significant heat when in use, and it can cause a fire if placed directly on or very close to combustible materials. Alternatively, a concrete block can be used to support the kamado if it is built into a table. Always completely close both vents at the end of cooking.

- What is the required distance from combustible materials?

The bottom of the kamado can generate significant heat when in use, and it can cause combustion if placed directly on or in close proximity to combustible material. Do not leave a lit kamado unattended with the lid open. Pay attention to dry leaves, decks, and other combustible materials in the vicinity of the kamado when in use, as they can pose a fire risk if charcoal or sparks come into contact with them.

- How can I get replacement parts for my barbecue?

Visit our online store for replacement parts, or email info@kamadosumo.es and tell us which part you need, along with your contact details and phone number.

- How often should I clean my barbecue?

Ashes should be removed regularly to keep the chimney properly ventilated. Kamado Sumo is coated with an enamel that is easily cleaned without chemical cleaning products. Inside, residual heat burns off excess grease, similar to a self-cleaning oven. Apart from removing ash, cleaning the exterior, and brushing the grill grate, regular cleaning is not necessary. As part of annual maintenance and for optimal operation, it is recommended to remove and brush the internal parts. DO NOT USE ANY chemical cleaners on the kamado.

- How do I clean the heat deflector and pizza stone?

The heat deflector and pizza stone will develop a natural patina, but they are still perfectly good to use. For occasional cleaning, once the heat deflector or pizza stone has completely cooled, scrape off any food residue with a scraper and wipe with a damp cloth. Over time, the heat deflector and pizza stone will darken and may show stains – this is normal and won't affect the flavor. Do not soak the deflector or pizza stone, and do not wash them in the dishwasher.
