Marabú Charcoal from Cuba
Marabú charcoal is traditionally made from the branches and trunks of Marabú bushes, a wild and invasive species. 'Marabú' was imported from Africa to the Caribbean in the 1800s. It grows as bushes and trees up to 10 meters tall. Due to the crisis in Cuba in the 1990s, many agricultural areas were left unused, which allowed 'Marabú' to slowly spread across large parts of these former farmlands. Marabú is listed in the 'Global Invasive Species Database,' which states that all named plants must be harvested if they begin to grow in places other than their natural occurrence. Harvesting Marabú in Cuba protects the natural biosphere and therefore also makes it an excellent choice for charcoal.
